Okonjima Lodge - Namibia Lodges

OKONJIMA LODGE

Okonjima is so much more than just a luxury lodge. It is also home to the AfriCat Foundation, which is committed to researching and rehabilitating Namibia’s threatened wild cat population. AfriCat is known internationally after featuring in an award-winning documentary filmed for the Discovery Channel.

Activities

  • Guests are invited to participate in the radio-tracking of the first rehabilitated cheetah on the Cheetah Tracking Trail.
  • Visit the Cheetah Project
  • Wild leopard are fed every night – giving the guests a chance to watch these magnificent predators from the safety of a hide
  • Game drives and the chance to view big cats in their natural environment
  • The Bushman Trail
  • Guided Nature Trails
  • Safe, self-guided trails of up to ten kilometres
  • Game hides at waterholes
  • Bird hides to spot some of the 300 indigenous species in the area

Accommodation

  • 10 luxury en-suite double rooms at Okonjima Lodge
  • 8 unique, thatched African Chalets at the Bush Camp

Meals

  • The early morning snack at the Lion Lapa consists of tea and coffee, a variety of breads, cheeses, tomato, salami and jams.
  • Brunch is served between 9h30 and 10h30, and consists of maize porridge, muesli and other breakfast cereals, fruit, yoghurt, salami, cheeses and bread. This is followed by eggs, sausage or bacon.
  • Brunch is served after the morning trail, and replaces a conventional lunch. We do this to make full use of the cool morning hours. However, guests who still want lunch may make a booking at reception.
  • Fresh fruit, as well as hot and cold refreshments, are available throughout the day.
  • Coffee, tea and cake is served between 15h00 and 17h00.
  • A gourmet three-course evening meal is served between 19h00 and 21h00.

These meals constitute full board at Okonjima.

If guests plan to arrive at lunchtime, we offer lunch as part of their full board for that day.

Restrictions

Children under the age of twelve are regrettably not permitted. This is due to the nature of our activities.

Regrettably no day visitors.

Seasons

The Lodge & Bush Camp are closed during December and January for maintenance and upgrading.

[Please contact Okonjima and confirm closing dates]

Location

Our retreat is only two and a half hours by road from Windhoek.

To those coming from the south (B1):

Take the gravel turn-off to your left just after the sign “Otjiwarongo 50km”

To those coming from the north (B1):

Take the gravel turn-off to the right just after the sign “Okahandja 130km”. This turn-off is approximately 48km south of Otjiwarongo, and is marked “Okonjima 24km”.

NB: Please take note of the following points!

  • In order to be in time for the afternoon activities, a general guide to arrival times is 15h00 in winter and 16h00 in summer.
  • Check-in is from 12h00.
  • Viewing of leopards is NOT guaranteed, and leopards as well as the rehabilitated cheetah are radio-collared for monitoring purposes!
  • The district road to Okonjima, the D2515, is now a private road. Be aware that the D2515 signboards have all been removed. However, D2515 still appears on Namibian road maps.
  • Due to the increasing numbers of tourism lodges holding cheetahs and other wild animals in captivity for entertainment purposes, Okonjima has decided to set an example to discourage this activity by withdrawing cheetahs appearing on the lawn in front of the lodge.
