The historic town of Bethanie, one of the oldest settlements in the country, lies west of Keetmanshoop. It can be
visited from the road leading to Lüderitz. A significant historical event took place in Bethanie in 1883 when the rust recorded deed of sale was signed at the house of the 19th
century Nama Chief, Josef Fredericks, for the land which was to become known as Lüderitzbucht. Buildings of historical interest in Bethanie are Schmelenhaus, built in 1814, and the
Rhenish Mission Church, which replaces the original twin-tower mission church and was inaugurated in 1899. |
