Situated 85 km south east of Hosea Kutako International Airport and 124 km from Windhoek, is Arnhem Cave, the
longest and most impressive cave system in Namibia. Still in a completely natural state, its eerie depths offer much to people who like exploring caves, as well as to those interested
in bats. Be warned, how- ever, that you need to wear sturdy shoes. Developed through the solution of lime-stone and dolomite from between thin layers of quartzite and shale, the
insoluble rock layers eventually collapsed to form the large complex of narrow tunnels and gaping caverns, up to 110 m deep and with a total length of 4.5 km. Five species of bats
have been recorded at Arnhem; the giant leaf-nosed, Egyptian slit-faced, horseshoe, long-fingered and leaf-nosed bats. |
