The small town of Grootfontein, which serves the surrounding cattle-ranching community, is the last centre on the
road to Rundu and the far north east. A historic fort from the German era, built in 1896 and situated at the top of the hill around which the town developed, houses the Grootfontein
Museum. Its main feature is a complete smithy, dating back to the days when ox-wagons were made. Close by is the fountain which gave rise to the town's name, encircled by the Tree
Park with its collection of exotic trees planted by the South West Africa Company many years ago. Accommodation in the Grootfontein and Otavi surroundings can be found at Guest
Farm Ghaub, Dornhügel Guest Farm, Oase Guest & Cattle Ranch. A one-stop information facility, the Tourist Information Centre offers an extensive information service, Internet,
fax and telephone facilities for local and inter- national tourists. |
